Statement
Over nearly three decades, Tim E White has developed a fine art photography practice that evocatively deals with time, space and the natural world. The results are both natural and unearthly, recognisable yet strangely alien. From vast minimal seascapes to the more intimate space of the forest he presents us with a vision that is seductive, unsettling and devoid of human presence, these otherworldly landscapes act as a container for memory, where the passage of time appears impressionistic and ghostly.
‘Landscape and the nature are the inspiration and raw materials of my work. My approach is contemplative and open to moments that resonate with me whether emotionally or aesthetically….. ‘
This visualising of time through the physical and celestial is layered by a meditative abstraction, manifesting time as an intensified phenomenon. A compression that presents a reflective landscape revealing detail previously imperceptible to the human eye. Tim maintains a deliberately ambiguous and enigmatic enquiry into the means by which we think, experience and relate to time, space and the photographic image.
‘My aim is to explore the tangibility of space, light and even time within the photograph………..By its very nature photography involves abstraction, or the reduction of human vision to a two-dimensional representation. The observer is confronted by an image of profound dimension whilst being drawn to the photographic surface’
This strategy of image making is inspired by a rich inheritance of reductive aesthetics from Friedrich and Turner to Rothko and also early photographic pioneers like Edward Steichen. A pictorial world without matter that would set us free from the pull of terrestrial gravity and immerse us in colour and light. Perhaps questioning where does the precision of photography end and the creativity of painting begin?
Bio
After earning a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from the University of Brighton - where received the prestigious ‘Sussex Artist of the Year’ award - Tim E White turned his focus toward photography, completing a Masters in Photography at the University of the Arts London in 2001. Since then, he has become established as both a fine art (timewhitefineart.com) and a commercial photographer (timewhite.com).
Tim’s work has been exhibited internationally, represented by numerous galleries and acquired by private collectors worldwide. He also has undertaken a wide range of commissions from corporate clients, dealers, and agents, seeing his work appear on book covers such as ‘The Brink’ by Jacob Polley (Picador 2003) and installed in office spaces - an example of which was his 2002 installation at McGraw Hill’s new Canary Wharf property. Early notable exhibitions/representation include a solo exhibition at The Focal Point Gallery, Southend in (2002), Mark Jason Gallery, London (2008) and annual appearances at the London Art Fair, and Affordable Art Fair in both London and New York with Mark Jason and Art-File. Then followed an intensive period pursuing a career as a travel photographer (see timewhite.com) completing over 400 editorial and advertorial assignments across nearly 100 different countries. In 2020, a move to the south coast UK provided the chance to refocus and turn his attention once again to his Fine Art practice, leading to a whole new body of work and a series of exhibitions, commissions and events (see below).
Throughout his career, Tim has travelled extensively, but for his fine art practice he prefers to shoot places of personal significance and inspiration - most notably the South Coast, UK, the Scottish Highlands and Iceland.
